London Arts and Health‘s Creative Health Sandpit is an informal space which exemplifies brilliant practice from the sector and allows members to learn, engage and explore in a structured yet open way.
In this online workshop, Sarah will explore the reclamation of agency through transformation and how her practice has evolved since being diagnosed with lymphoma in 2017 and the subsequent years of remission . Later in the session, Taking the ‘Pill Cup’ and her miniature paintings as a starting point, we will gather our personal symbols of illness and expand them through a series of drawing prompts.
About Sarah Davis:
Sarah Davis uses hands-on techniques to explore the cyclical nature of recovery and renewal. Her approach is often slow, using traditional mediums such as wood carving, wax modelling and miniature painting. These laboured works are often combined with functional elements and medical ephemera, leading to deeply layered art objects. Via these contrasting approaches, Davis’ work confronts the body in relation to sickness and health. The almost archaeological search for answers within Davis’ work highlights the precariousness of recoveries truth and the fragile space left for desire and agency. Teaching is a big part of Sarah's practice, having taught woodcarving at The City & Guilds of London Art school since 2021. She also runs illumination & miniature painting workshops at cultural institutions across the UK.
