About this event

Considering writing a memoir? Working on a memoir manuscript? This workshop will help you create five key sentences to guide your story and techniques to make your writing more powerful. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced writer, these tools will help you level up your craft—and have fun writing!

Led by Allison K Williams, this workshop features activities designed to spark your creative imagination and identify the most compelling aspects of your life story. We’ll talk about memoir vs. autobiography and how you don’t have to be famous for your story to be important. You’ll learn a simple dramatic structure to get started (or refine your work-in-progress) and how to translate your emotional experience into words that create feelings in your readers. We’ll mix teaching time, solo writing exercises, optional sharing, and Q&A. You’ll leave with a workbook including different ways to write your memoir, plus a sense of your whole story—and how to tell it. We’ll also briefly discuss how memoirs get published and reach readers.

Whether you’re just thinking about writing a memoir or well underway, this class will help you shape your story, feel confident in your work, and develop a plan to move forward.

About the facilitator:

Allison K Williams is the author of SEVEN DRAFTS: Self-Edit Like a Pro from Blank Page to Book, and has edited and coached writers to publication with traditional, literary and independent publishers, and the New York Times and Mail on Sunday Bestseller lists.
