CREATIVE NETWORKS - 4K is a Lie and Compression is Evil
Thursday, 2 October 2014 from 17:45 to 20:45 (PDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
4K is a Lie and Compression is Evil Speaker: Geoff Boyle FBKS, Cinematographer www.gboyle.co.uk
Award winning cinematographer Geoff Boyle has filmed many movies, such as the BAFTA short About A Girl and Wallander for TV. He’s also shot well known music videos and commercials for just about every major brand you can name. Geoff is a visiting professor at the University of the West of England and has taught workshops around the world.
4K is a Lie - single sensor cameras have serious problems with resolution and colour response that are simply inherent in the design. It’s Geoff’s contention that 4K cameras are at most 3K and have serious moiré and aliasing issues as well as their known faults. However, fear of using uncompressed 4K due to the amount of data being processed is unjustified. Compression is Evil – people said the same in 1999 about finishing commercials at 2K, yet nobody blinks at 2K now, it’s just data. A short film can now be shot at uncompressed 4K, graded, conformed and made as the DCP all at 4K and on a laptop.
