Sustainable Fashion

Thursday 8th March 2018 | 17:45-20:30

Creative Networks is Leeds Arts University's major professional events programme with talks from a diverse group of high profile speakers from across the creative industries to entertain, challenge and inspire.

Join us as we delve into the world of sustainable fashion, from both a design and research point of view.

Sustainable fashion is a part of the growing design philosophy and trend of sustainability, the goal of which is to create a system which can be supported indefinitely in terms of human impact on the environment and social responsibility.

About the speakers

Alexander Taylor is an industrial designer who established his design studio in 2002. The products he creates are informed by ongoing research, development and collaborations with the industry’s finest minds, working towards the most appropriate and innovative solutions.

His early work comprised of furniture and lighting for Europe’s most respected design manufacturers, including ClassiCon and Zanotta. A collection of work was also commissioned by David Gill Galleries, along with several private commissions, most notably for Alexander McQueen.

In 2008 Alexander was invited to work on a project for adidas for the London Olympic Games 2012. Challenged with creating something totally new for the industry, in relation to footwear construction, he developed PrimeKnit, which at the time was hailed as one the most sustainable and innovative products ever produced by the brand. The technology is now used in the making of tens of millions of shoes each year.

Alexander has worked with adidas’ creative direction over the last decade and continues to work as a design and innovation consultant, most recently working with adidas to design and engineer the now iconic adidas x Parley shoe, where the upper is made entirely from Parley ocean plastic. The shoe was presented during the high profile climate change summit at the United Nations, New York in 2015.

Parley for the Oceans is an organisation in which creators, thinkers and leaders come together to raise awareness of the state of the oceans and collaborate on projects that can protect and conserve them. Alexander is part of this creative network, seeking out and implementing solutions and working on ways to design our way out of the problem.

Amy Twigger Holroyd is a designer, maker, researcher and writer, active in the world of fashion and sustainability.

She founded her experimental knitwear label, Keep & Share, in 2004 in order to explore ways of designing for longevity and versatility in a fashion context. Her work has been featured in many books, publications and exhibitions, from Vogue to Fashion Theory. Following her PhD (Birmingham Institute of Art & Design) and postdoctoral fellowship (University of Leeds), Amy joined Nottingham Trent University in 2016.

Amy’s first book, Folk Fashion: Understanding Homemade Clothes, was published by I.B.Tauris in 2017. Her current design practice is focused on Reknit Revolution, a project encouraging amateur knitters to explore the inventive reworking of existing knitted garments.

Booking is essential as places are limited so please book a ticket.

Please note the start time of 5.45pm is for drinks prior to when the talk starts at 6.30pm in the lecture theatre.
