Event description

Description

Our event aims to design and improve services to tackle inequality by supporting marginalised young people to use their creativity and perhaps think about a future in the creative industries.

This event is for artists, youth and social workers and creative practitioners. It proposes to further research the problem care experienced young people face in relation to levels and causes of exclusion to creative and cultural potentials.

We hope to use our findings to propose solutions to overcome barriers to access, participation, training and employment. We will use our collective contributions to inform good practice, share our findings and propose recommendations for implementation including perhaps a pilot of key concepts, evidencing what worked and why we think solutions proposed will provide evidence for strong, social improvement.

We also wish to explore how to support workforce development in this specialist area; how to develop best practice and support our peers through connecting knowledge and opportunity.

The event is participatory and will include workshop input from Maggie Norris, Artistic Director of The Big House - https://thebighouse.uk.com/

'My history is in theatre and film and then I started working in London prisons (Wormwood Scrubs and Pentonville) where I met high numbers of care leavers. After researching what was available for young people leaving care, I found that although there were increasing opportunities, many were unable to sustain those opportunities because of a lack of life skills, pastoral support and low levels of confidence. The Big House was set up to address these issues and uses drama combined with long term support, life and employment skills workshops and peer to peer mentoring to help care leavers achieve their potential.' Maggie Norris, The Big House

This event is supported by Creative Scotland.
