Event description

Description

What is it like to be an artist?

This talk marks the release of Creative States of Mind: Psychoanalysis and The Artist's Process (2019) by author, artist and psychotherapist, Patricia Townsend.

The book draws upon interviews with professional artists and their own individual experiences of creating art works. The author reflect on her own practice as an artist and explores this in conjunction with psychoanalytic theory.

Patricia Townsend will introduce her research and will be joined on stage by psychoanalyst Kenneth Wright and artist Gina Glover to discuss the different trajectories of this fascinating subject. Informed by theories of Donald Winnicott, Marion Milner and Christopher Bollas, they will delve into the state of mind of the artist and will shed some light on how new ideas emerge.

Speakers:

Patricia Townsend, PhD, is an artist working with video, photography and installation, and a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. She was formerly (as Patricia Marsden) consultant psychotherapist at St George’s Hospital Eating Disorders Service.

Gina Glover is a photographic artist and recipient of the Royal Photographic Society's Hood Medal. Her work is exhibited internationally and she is currently working on the themes of science and genetics, energy transition and the anthropocene.
