Creative Story Telling: Using Photography

By Spark Somerset

Overview

How to use photography to create meaningful stories and convey important messages

A picture says a thousand words, and throughout history photographs have been telling important stories and illustrating conversations. But how can we use photography to tell our organisation's story, and how can we leverage them to demonstrate our impact?

Join us for this in-person session where we will look at techniques you can use to take photos with your phone, focusing on telling a story through a single image.

We will consider composition, lighting, and subject matter, and explore the idea that photography can make the apparently mundane appear extraordinary. There will also be opportunities for practical photography activities, including taking photos within the immediate environment, and reviewing them to explore the stories therein.

You don't need any photography equipment - just a phone you can take photos with to start creating!

About the trainer

Your trainer for this session will be Somerset-based artist Richard Tomlinson, a specialist in photography, film, and digital media, and founder of Original Light.

Richard has been commissioned by many cultural organisations in the south west, including: Take Art, Somerset Film, The South West Heritage Trust, Somerset Art Works, Activate Performing Arts, Pavilion Dance South West and B-Side Art. He is also a Community Curator with South West Heritage Trust, and involved with a long-term early years creativity project with Take Art.

Please note: We are hosting an additional session with Richard on Wednesday 18 February which will look into the use of video and editing to tell stories. Tickets for an individual session are £10, but if you're interested in attending both, your ticket for the second session will be £5. Click here to book your place.

This training is offered as part of a project that is being funded by the UK Government through the Shared Prosperity Fund. Subsidised tickets are solely available to VCFSE staff and volunteers from organisations operating in Somerset.

If this cost is a barrier to you attending this training, please contact liz.tozer@sparksomerset.org.uk.
