There is an urgent need for cost-effective, sustainable methods to improve and maintain quality of life for older people, including those with age-related conditions.

It is increasingly recognised that alternative approaches such as arts-based therapies and group activities can contribute to well-being for older people, across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. Research into these novel non-medical approaches may help lead to increased provision and choice to promote healthy ageing and support neurorehabilitation.

We will hear from researchers exploring different novel interventions to improve movement and quality of life in Parkinson’s and stroke.

Dr Daniel Eaves is a sport and exercise scientist conducting research into action observation and motor imagery as techniques to facilitate movement, and has recently investigated the potential application of these methods in stroke rehabilitation.

Dr Dawn Rose is a music psychologist who has been investigating the effects of music and rhythm on movement and mood in older people and those with Parkinson’s.

Dr Yoon Irons is a researcher and music therapist, who is studying the potential health benefits of singing for people with long-term health conditions, including Parkinson’s and stroke aphasia
