7th March: A Taste of Playwriting with visiting tutor Gill Kirk

Something a bit different! We’re going to look at plays, with visiting tutor Gill Kirk. We’ll focus on what turns something into a play; what playwriting demands that other formats don’t; what works and doesn’t when you’re writing for audiences, rooms, technicians and actors; and what permissions theatre can give you, that other formats can’t. We’ll explore and learn through practical exercises, so you can get a feel of what playwriting actually feels like when it’s in your own hands.

About Gill: Gill’s plays have been commissioned and produced across the UK, including at the New Wimbledon, Glasgow Arches, Theatre Royal Bath (Ustinov and egg) and Bristol’s Alma, Old Vic and Tobacco Factory. She’s written about dementia, climate dystopia, orgasms (lack of), community disintegration and wealthy abusive families - all with a twisted-mirror kind of dark comedy. She’s an established playwriting tutor and a script doctor, mostly recently as narrative consultant on feature documentary, The Consultant (HBO, BBC’s Storyville)

This is the third workshop in Clare Reddaway's 2026 spring block of writing workshops. Clare runs regular creative writing workshops online from her home in Bath. Clare keeps her workshops small, enabling all antendees to participate, share, receive feedback and advice.

The workshop will run for two and a half hours. We will meet online on zoom. Details of the zoom meeting will be emailed to you prior to the workshop, and are also available via Eventbrite after booking.

Clare is running two other workshops in Spring 2026:

17th January: Every Picture Tells a Story

In this workshop, we’ll be looking at pictures as a launch for your writing. If you find inspiration visually, this is one for you. We will share a wide variety of images and find the stories that spring out of them. Book into this workshop to give you some great ideas to get those stories flowing for the New Year.

14th February: Love and Romance

This workshop is all things romance - well, it’s Valentine’s Day after all! Love and heartbreak are the stuff of many a story from Price and Prejudice and Anna Karenina to romantasy, chick lit and airport block busters. It can be cheesy – but it doesn’t have to be. We’ll be channelling our inner Norah Ephron and sprinkling a bit of love dust into your writing.

About the workshops:

The workshop facilitator is Clare Reddaway, who has been running monthly writing workshops at her home in central Bath for years - and now in a very modern way, runs workshops online. All of the workshops aim to be supportive and encouraging to writers of prose, particularly short stories, at all levels. Clare provides exercises which are stimulating and inspiring (hopefully!) in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
