Event description

Description

An opportunity for participants aged 11 to 16 to participate in a free creative writing workshop hosted by Hastings Library's writer in residence, Alan Ward.

Come along and:

  • experience the newly refurbished Hastings Library building
  • participate in exercises designed to generate creative ideas and develop your writing
  • meet other young people with an interest in writing

The workshop is designed to give you the opportunity to try your hand at some creative writing and will last up to 1.5 hours.

Some participants may be invited to read at Hastings Library's official opening ceremony later in the year, and your work may be displayed in the library or online as part of the writer in residence project.

Please book online to reserve your space. Spaces are limited and only booked attendees will be able to participate in these events. If you book onto an event but then can't make it, please cancel your booking via Eventbrite or contact us to let us know: space is limited, and if you can't make it we'd like someone else to be able to benefit from the opportunity.

These events are part of East Sussex County Council's Advantage East Sussex project, funded by Arts Council England.

Answers to common questions:

Do I need to be an experienced writer?
Not at all. It doesn't matter if you've never tried writing creatively before, or if you're often writing short stories, poems or something else. Come along and see what happens.

Can I book for all three workshops?
The workshops will be very similar, and we would like as many people as possible to be able to benefit from them. Please only book onto one, initially.

I've already attended a writing workshop as part of the writer in residence programme (in school or hosted by another type of organisation), can I still come to this?
Yes, please do! This is a great opportunity for you to follow up on what you've already done and visit the library building, so we'd love to see you there.

Do I need to bring anything with me or prepare anything in advance?
No. Pens and paper will be available on the day.

Where in the library will the event be held?
Please come to the third floor when you arrive and we will escort you to the space. If you arrive late or have trouble finding us, just ask a member of staff.

I am the parent/guardian of a young person, will I be able to stay with them?
We'd encourage parents/guardians to browse the library whilst the workshop is taking place to give the young people an opportunity to work creatively without feeling self-conscious. If your child has additional needs that require you to stay with them please let us know on the day.

Is there disabled access?
The workshops will take place on the third floor of the library, which can be accessed by a lift. If you have any other needs please contact us in advance of the workshop to discuss them.
