About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours
  • Free venue parking

This one-day event brings together artists, farmers, landowners, community, academics and policymakers to explore the intersections of high nature value farming, nature recovery, community and creative practice in the landscapes of Teesdale and Swaledale.

Together, we'll reflect on how creativity and the arts can amplify and enrich conversations around farming, ecology and the future of our uplands.

The symposium marks the culmination of Creatively Connected, a one-year arts project forming part of Tees-Swale:Naturally Connected, an £8m programme funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, managed by North Pennines National Landscape Team and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Creatively Connected is joint funded by Arts Council England.

This event is brought to you by Northern Heartlands, the creative producer of Creatively Connected.

What to expect:

  • Welcome and introduction from Professor Sir John Lawton, CBE, FRS
  • A participatory workshop examining how creative arts can help us understand, engage with, and amplify voices and high nature value farming practice
  • Expert panel discussion exploring the opportunities and challenges to creatively engaging with high nature value farming ideas
  • A poet in residence who will reflect on the day's themes and insights and share this in a live spoken word performance at the end of the event

Organised by

We believe in the creative power of communities to bring about real change.

Northern Heartlands is an arts charity and Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation based in County Durham bringing the creativity of artists together with individuals, communities and partner organisations. Together, we deliver projects, activities and events that can change how people feel about themselves, the places where they live, and what happens there.

We work with people to celebrate the unique identity of a place, valuing its heritage and culture, and fostering creativity. By amplifying local voices, we help empower communities to overcome challenges and imagine new possibilities so meaningful change can happen.
