Who is it for? All Research Students

What will it cover? This development day brings in expert trainer, Dr Adair Richards.

Dr Richards is a trainer, consultant, broadcaster and academic who specialises in providing high quality training to PGR students and early career researchers.
This day long training workshop consists of 2 sessions - in the morning "Creativity in Research" and in the afternoon "Leadership". You may attend a single session but please email Simone Apel to let her know which session, morning or afternoon, you will be attending.

Morning session: Creativity in research

This engaging and experiential course is aimed at helping you learn academically-verified creativity strategies. It will be of use to anybody who wants to improve their ability to think creatively, see problems from different angles, or use their intuition more effectively. It will introduce a variety of quick and also more structured creativity frameworks that can be applied in many aspects of the postgraduate research process.

By the end of the morning you will

  • understand common blockages to creativity
  • learn a variety of techniques to promote creativity in research
  • learn how to see problems from different angles
  • learn how to adapt these skills to your particular research problem.

Afternoon session: Leadership and your research career

This interactive and reflective workshop introduces some key theories on successful leadership in the 21st century and focuses on identifying the key characteristics of effective leaders as well as the barriers to effective leadership within organisations. There will be an emphasis on how leadership development and leadership practice can be applied by the student in their current situation and there will be lots of opportunities for discussion and debate.

By the end of the workshop you will have:

  • Understood some of the key models of leadership theory
  • Identified the primary characteristics of effective leaders
  • Measured yourself against these characteristics, understanding your own strengths and weaknesses
  • Learnt what the barriers are in a large organisation to effective leadership (and how to try and overcome them!)
