Description

** This walk is timed to take in part of the Trafalgar Day parade by Sea Cadets and sailors from the Royal Navy. **

Each year on 21 October a ceremony is held marking the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a battle which defined the Age of Sail and which sealed British dominion of the seas for a hundred years. Britain’s wealth, prosperity and status as a nation on the world stage still owe much to the courage and skill of the crews of the British ships and their great leader, Admiral Lord Nelson, that momentous day off Cape Trafalgar. This parade takes place in the shadow of the great admiral's statue in Trafalgar Square.

We will then move on to a walk that interprets contemporary and historic St James's through creatures concealed in its streets and buildings.

My original ‘Creatures of the City’ walk proved to be a fun way for people of all ages to appreciate the City of London’s remarkable story. We then headed west to find more 'Creatures in the (Covent) Garden' and now we're continuing our journey...

On this walk, I’ll follow an equally ‘beastly’ theme to explore a different kind of wilderness in the once green spaces around St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square and St James's. Using references to animals in the buildings and streets, we’ll roam from medieval to modern, tracking the 'king of beasts' (as well as notable Kings and Queens), giraffes, springbok, horses, hunting birds, dolphins, beavers, eagles and other exotic creatures from around the planet.

Human beings we'll encounter include famous sea-dogs, a butchered monarch, a busy Wren and the pioneering scientist who created the binomial system for classifying the entire natural world.

So, ‘camel long’ with your friends and family members of all ages to track those creatures lurking out there in the Fields!

Depart from a location near the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

This walk is timed to fit around the Trafalgar Day parade by the Sea Cadets and sailors from the Royal Navy.
