Speakers on the night:

Sushil Kumar

Sushil Kumar is a criminal defence barrister, who specialises in serious organised crime, fraud and violence. He has particular experience in defending professionals, high profile and high net worth individuals. He has given lectures to both solicitors and fellow barristers and been asked to advise well known sportsmen in the fields of football, boxing and cricket. He lectured at one of Germany's leading law schools in Hamburg on war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is an expert on the Nuremburg trials, which followed the Second World War. He worked as a researcher for the British Institute of International and Comparative Law on the European Union funded "Iran Project" focusing on human rights in the Islamic republic and was called to the bar in 2009. Other cases he has defended in include people trafficking from Iraq, Vietnam and China and large scale criminal conspiracies. His practice encompasses all areas of criminal defence .

Mike Conway

Mike Conway is a former prison governor and Operations Director with vast experience of the criminal justice system in both the public and private sectors. He is currently employed as the Director of Strategy & Corporate Change in one of the private sector providers. From working in the dock of the Old Bailey to helping tackle the infamous Strangeways prison riot, which lasted for 25 days, he has first-hand knowledge of the pressures on the prison system. His talk will address the current challenges, including the issue of drugs in prisons, and how to create the correct balance between punishment and rehabilitation."

Tom Lloyd

Tom Lloyd - Former chief constable of Cambridgeshire has had a long career working throughout the police force on many high profile cases. He has a wealth of experience and some great insights and controversial opinions on drug laws that make for a fascinating talk.

Mr. Lloyd has called for the legalising of drugs. He has said he now regrets investigating and arresting drug users during his career as a policeman in London and Cambridge. “When you think about arresting somebody who is in possession of drugs, are you really catching a criminal?” he asked. “When it came to law enforcement I think I caused more harm than good.” He is chairman of Whistleblowers UK. He said: We have a simple, if ambitious, vision for the future of this country which is an environment where whistleblowers feel confident that they can expose wrongdoing without fear of personal loss or detriment."
