Could Your Idea Become a Research Study?

NIHR Clinical Research Network West Midlands invites all trainee-led research collaborative groups from the West Midlands to participate in our networking and research pump-priming “Sandpit”.

Who should attend? This is a research project funding competition open to all trainee-led research collaborative groups, and their allied members, (including Consultants, students and associated non-medical colleagues).

What is a “Sandpit”? Sandpits are intensive discussion forums where free thinking is encouraged to delve into the problems on the agenda to uncover innovative solutions. They bring together people, who may not normally interact, to inspire creative thinking to solve existing problems. A variety of outcomes are possible, ranging from a single large research project, to several smaller projects, feasibility studies, or networking activities etc. Outcomes are not pre-determined, but are defined during the Sandpit process.

The Sandpit process includes:

  • Defining the scope of an issue and agreeing a common language and terminology.
  • Sharing understanding of the problem through participants' expertise.
  • Using creative and innovative thinking techniques in break-out sessions to focus on a problem and turning these outputs into a potential research project.

Project Requirements:

  • Must be patient-centric and be relevant to the local population needs of the West Midlands.
  • Should relate to national specialist College priorities and/or James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priorities where available (Visit: http://www.jla.nihr.ac.uk/priority-setting-partnerships/).
  • Should have a tangible hypothesis and be able to collect suitable numbers of patients within a 12-month period.

It is the intention that these projects will aim to provide important background information to help support or power a potential future application for a prospective controlled trial.

Sandpit Awards: Each Sandpit team will be asked to nominate a representative to pitch their study idea to a Dragon’s Den style panel of experts. The best ideas will be offered expert guidance to optimise the project, and then go on to benefit from the free support of a CRN-funded Data Manager and use of ‘REDCap' (Research Electronic Data Capture) software to realise their project for a 12 month period in the first instance.

*If you do not currently have access to a research group, you are also welcome to attend but the CRN support on offer will only be available to those working in a collaborative research group that contains trainees at its core.
