About this event

Cromarty's Coastal Critters is BACK for 2025, and better than ever!

Take a deep breath and dive in to experience life living beneath the Cromarty Firth in this newly updated version of our insightful and fun walking tour...

  • Discover what lives beneath the sea without even getting your feet wet as an experienced guide takes you beneath the Cromarty Firth and introduces you to the weird and the wild!
  • Take part in active citizen science as we conclude the tour with a WDC Shorewatch survey in the hopes of catching a sighting of the famous resident Bottlenose Dolphins!
  • NEW FOR 2025 - hunt down clues to life beneath the waves on a seashore search for shells, egg cases, and if lucky even starfish and crabs!

  • Tours are subject to tides - tours conducted on low or falling tides will take place partly on Cromarty beach. Tours conducted on high or rising tides will not take place on beach. Tours depart from the Birthplace Museum - please arrive no later than ten minutes before tour sets off to check in.
  • As Cromarty is an exposed shingle beach we advise wearing appropriate outdoor clothing for the walk - particularly outdoor, waterproof footwear
  • Tours will last between 45-60 minutes - we advise using facilities if necessary before departing on the tour. Toilet facilities are available at Hugh Miller's Birthplace Museum.
  • Please note wildlife sightings are not guaranteed during this walking tour
  • Only service and guide dogs are permitted on our Cromarty's Coastal Critters tour
  • All attendees under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian and cannot be left unattended during the walks.

Frequently asked questions

Are we guaranteed to see wildlife on this tour?

As with all wildlife watching experiences, we cannot guarantee sightings of wildlife on every tour. However, our tour does compensate for any lack of wildlife sightings with a number of activities for participants to get involved with.

Why are the times for the tours different each week?

Our walks always take place on a falling or low tide to ensure maximum safety. Consequently this means each week tours will go out at different times. We aim to always have two tours each week, but some weeks will have only one tour or no tour at all based on tide timings.

Will we be allowed to take anything we find on the beach home with us?

Although this tour involves a seashore search to look for shells, we advise leaving them on the beach after the activity as wildlife such as hermit crabs, urchins, and barnacles will be able to use them. If you would like to take any shells home however you are perfectly entitled to.

Are dogs allowed on these walks?

Only guide and service dogs are permitted on our beach guided tours.
