This session will cover the current enquiry landscape including HMRC’s information powers, settlement opportunities, APN’s, penalty discussions, recent enquiry-related case law and current consultations.
Employment Tax Enquiry Update
Covering current and evolving aspects of employment tax enquiries including IR35 and intermediaries legislation, new travel and subsistence rules, construction industry scheme and national minimum wage along with tactical guidance on dealing with employer compliance reviews.
VAT Enquiry Update
This will look at the role of appeals in VAT disputes including the effectiveness of statutory reviews, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and the pros and cons of appeals to the Tax Tribunal.
Neil Tipping - Neil is the Consultancy Team Leader. He has over thiry years' experience in all areas of Tax having worked in boht HMRC and public Practice specialising in HMRC Enquiries. Neil is a regula commentator in various publications on HMRC's expanding powers and how they affect Practice.
Neeta Vora (nee Vaitha), ATT - Neeta has established an enviable record in successfully defending IR35, employment status and CIS enquiries (including the withdrawal of gross payment status); as well as other contentious issues. Neeta also has experience in agreeing settlements with HMRC thereby avoiding cases being heard at First Tier Tribunal. She also has a breadth of experience advising agencies and umbrella companies. Neeta does not sit on the fence and is not afraid of taking a more rigorous approach to achieve her successes.
Glyn Edwards CIOT – Glyn is a VAT dispute specialist with extensive experience in the Tax Tribunals and in the higher courts. He is also a keen advocate for the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution as a means of settling cases in a less contentious manner. His recent successes include challenging HMRC’s policy on the flat-rate scheme and on the treatment of pub conversions. In 2017 he has cases scheduled to be heard in the Court of Session in Scotland and in the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
