Dolly Chapman ran away and joined a trail crew at age 17. She sharpened her first saw in 1980 and she’s now fettled 2,164 saws. Going by her sell-out teaching schedule, she is the foremost filing-tutor in the world. She started to teach in 1993. For 30 years Dolly was employed by US Forest Service as a wilderness trail-crew leader, using crosscut saws to maintain hiking trails and support firefighting.
I became intrigued with crosscut saws when I first realized that sharpness of saw teeth did not always make for ease of sawing. Since that bit of insight, I've had a long satisfying career as a trail crew leader, I've had the pleasure of working with hundreds of enthusiastic and fascinating people and I have enjoyed tuning, sharpening and testing thousands of saws. I love to connect with folks who like crosscut saws and to help us share our knowledge of the tools and skills and projects that pull us all together.
The US citizens treasure their federally designated 'Wilderness' areas, and have chosen to manage those lands with hand tools and traditional skills. That decision has made crosscut saws and associated skills very important for maintenance of hiking trails and suppression of forest fires.
Dolly is passionate about saw sharpening and saw use. Given the increase in wood-fired heating, and their low risk to even novice users, crosscut saws can be a great way to process firewood.
