What connects the stories of a Gambian rapper, an exiled Italian writer and an English-Irish composer? And how might they encounter two Greek musicians, a London-born poetess and the Indian tabla?

Ciro Montanari

This concert of traditional, newly-composed and improvised music draws together a remarkable array of performers to respond to the extraordinary times in which Europe is living today.

Evgenios Voulgaris

The programme opens with modal music of the Mediterranean, and we are thrilled to be joined by one of Europe’s leading modal multi-instrumentalists, Evgenios Voulgaris. It will feature the world premiere of Sing no Sad Songs for Me by Rachel Beckles Willson, a song cycle setting poetry by Christina Rossetti, drawing modal and Indian music into the world of 19th-century London.

Rachel Beckles Willson

The evening will open a space to listen to new crossings: musical improvisations in response to stories and songs by young Africans recently arrived in Europe. To discover more, come to this concert and buy Arts against Slavery's launching CD Today is Good, a compilation of songs by recent arrivals from Africa which emerged from a year of workshops in eastern Sicily co-led by Rachel Beckles Willson and Francesco Iannuzzelli.

Arts against Slavery

Arts against Slavery is a new charity supporting the changing population of Europe by developing a creatively different vision for the continent. A yet-to-be-told story is that many young people landing on the shorelines of Europe have been brought there by slavery networks, and are at risk of being newly enslaved in the European black economy. By harnessing the power of the arts – giving people voices, fostering friendship, transforming narratives and creating opportunities – Arts against Slavery aims to lead a new conversation about social responsibility, dignity, and the joy of creative transformation.
