About this event

Join us for a fun-filled day of cleaning up the beautiful Crossness foreshore . This event is all about making a positive impact on the environment and leaving our beloved Thames foreshore a little bit cleaner.

Encourage your friends and family and come together with like-minded individuals who share a passion for preserving nature. Together, we'll roll up our sleeves and work towards a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone to enjoy.

During this in-person event, we'll provide all the necessary PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) kit, including hi-vis tabards and gloves, and litter pickers. So, all you need to bring is wellies or walking boots and your enthusiasm! Whether you're a seasoned environmentalist or new to clean-up events, everyone is welcome to participate*.

Not only will you be helping to protect the local ecosystem, but you'll also have the opportunity to connect with fellow volunteers and make new friends. So, mark your calendars and get ready to make a difference this spring. We look forward to seeing you then!

*Please note: only those aged 18+ can work on the beach. If you are younger - or if you have mobility issues - you are welcome to volunteer on the Thames path at our base camp supporting the foreshore team.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to wear for the clean up?

Please wear wellies or walking boots with good grips and ankle support as the ground can be muddy and slippy. Wear old comfortable layers that you don't mind getting dirty/muddy. We can provide gloves and hi-vis tabards that you can wear over a coat/jacket.

What if it rains?

We usually go ahead even if it rains especially with short showers. In the event of very bad weather, we will notify volunteers in advance if we have to postpone the session.

Are under 18's allowed to volunteer?

Unfortunately not as the foreshore can be a hazardous environment. If you have a younger person who wants to volunteer with you, then you may be able to work on the Thames path doing litter picks there. Contact us for more information.

Turning the tide on plastic pollution on the River Thames foreshore at Crossness, Thamesmead SE28.

The Crossness River Action Group has been set up to clean up the foreshore at Crossness, Thamesmead SE28. This part of the River Thames foreshore is a natural landscape, abundant with wildlife. Unfortunately the mess here is caused by humans and so we aim to remove all litter to stop it contaminating the land, harming wildlife and going down river to the sea. Our volunteer-led group, supported by Thames21, has four NCFE-qualified river action leaders. In Autumn 2022 we received a grant from Making Space For Nature fund to buy equipment for our events.
