Event description
Charles II was crowned in May 1661 in a lavish ceremony that sealed his restoration

About this event

On 23 April 1661, Charles II was crowned – almost a year after he was restored to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

His coronation was not just a lavish ceremony but was also a deeply political event; it was a powerful moment for the king to demonstrate his authority and majesty to his subjects, allies, and enemies.

This talk will look at the preparations for the coronation, the ceremony itself, and retells how the lavish day unfolded for the king.

This talk will be presented by Dr Neil Johnston, Head of Early Modern Records
