Description

Please join us at Croxley Great Barn on Saturday and/or Sunday to volunteer to help maintain one of Hertfordshire's oldest timber framed buildings. You are welcome to join for one day or both days, starting at 10.30am until around 5pm.

The barn holds all that was considered dear to William Morris and the other founding members of the SPAB. Built in the spring of 1398, with oak trees felled in the Winter of 1397, it is a remarkable structure, Grade II* listed, and unchanged for many years, remaining relatively unaltered from the time of the Plantagenet Kings.

ROLE

This years volunteers will be helping with general maintainance of the barn, including removing of vegetation, clearing gutters, moving equiptment and lime washing walls. In preparation for future years and more extensive works to the barn, we will also be looking for some volunteers to undertaken a measure survey and conditon survey of the barns existing state. No specific experience is need for these jobs, but anyone with Surveying or repair knowledge, please let us know in advance.

EQUIPTMENT

Volunteers will be provided with protective gear on site, including eye wear, aprons and plastic gloves. Please come prepared wearing long trousers, studdy footwear, long sleeves and a hard hat if you own one. Tasks may require additional equiptment so if you have gardening gloves and/or secateurs at home, please bring them along. Additional information of what to bring will be provided closer to the time.

WHATS PROVIDED

As previously mentioned above some protective wear will be provided on site. No onsite sleeping arrangements will be provided. If you wish to volunteer for both Saturday and Sunday, you will need to travel to and from the site each morning and evening. There is local accomodation in Rickmansworth if you would prefer to stay near by. Portaloo's will be provided on site.

Refreshments including tea, coffee, water and cakes will be provided on both days. No main meals, lunch or dinner are included in the price. For lunch please bring a packed lunch or visit one of the a local pubs, The Coach and Horses is a short walk away and has lovely food. On Saturday a BBQ will be provided at an addtional cost.

Please bring cash with you if you wish to buy additional refreshments, drinks or attend the BBQ.

PUBLIC OPEN DAY

The public open day at the barns will take place on Saturday from 11am-5pm. All volunteers are welcome to partake in any of the planned activities.

Please be aware that the tour will commence at 11am on Saturday at the barn, so please at arrive at 10.30am whether by train, car or foot to the St Joan of Arc School car park, Rickmansworth High Street, WD3 1HG, where it is a 10-15 minute sign-posted walk to the barn.

Parking available in school car park (WD3 1HG).

A rough outline programme for the Saturday:

10.30-11am - Arrive at barn

11am-1pm - Talk by Stephen Bull - Introduction to the barn and it's history, philosophy of repair, historic tools and techniques, and demonstration.

1-2.30pm - Lunch - light refreshments including tea and cake, will be provided thoroughout the day, but a full lunch is not available. We would recommend bringing a packed lunch that can be eaten on site or visiting a local pub, The Coach and Horses is a short walk away.

3-5pm - Demonstrations - including hot lime and historic tools.

5.30pm - BBQ (& Beer) - at a small fee you can partake in the food and drinks, prepared and provided on site.
