Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Lecture title:
The friend carer: Constructing a supportive identity in the context of self-harm.

Speaker:
Dr Hannah Heath, University of Chester

Abstract:
The aim of this lecture is to report on a series of interviews and focus groups looking at how the role of a supportive friend is made sense of by the friends of those who self-harm, and support providers.

Previous research has established that friends hold a unique position with someone who self-harms; they are a preferred source of support, are used in therapeutic interventions, and friend-self-harm is a key indicator of personal self-harm. Whilst research has established friends’ unique position, very little research has considered the impact providing support has on the friends. This paper examines how friends, and support providers, make sense of the friends’ supportive role.

Through providing support the friends challenged their previous role within the friendship; they were no longer ‘doing’ friendship. By drawing on social roles including friend, youth, family, and caregivers, the friends and support providers attempted to develop a coherent understanding of the friends’ behaviour. In the absence of a concrete identity, the friends resided in an intersection of constructions and were left to fumble at what social roles they were able to access. It is evident that, in providing care, friends are doing something unusual which they struggle to understand.
