In March this year the price of a single bitcoin surpassed the value of an ounce of gold for the first time, as the exchange price for one unit of the digital currency closed at $1,268, while a troy ounce of gold cost $1,233. Just five months later, bitcoin is now trading over three times higher at $4,110 whilst gold is up a mere $56 at $1289.
So what is actually happening here? And is it possible that, as cryptocurrencies start to go mainstream (bitcoin is just one of over a thousand cryptos in circulation) they could possibly threaten to challenge gold for the 'ultimate money' mantle?
The two asset classes share many similarities and also many differences. But ultimately it comes down to how they behave as money - a store of value, a unit of account and a medium of exchange.... and that's where the debate gets interesting!
Gold has been doing all three very effectively for thousands of years and now the Internet Age has thrown this new exotic financial asset class to the fore and under the global finance spotlight.
So the big question we will be seeking to answer is what does the future hold and will there still be a legitimate place for both gold and cryptocurrencies in your portfolio 10 years from now?
We have assembled a unique panel of gold and cryptocurrency experts who will be debating this question from both sides of the fence and fielding questions from the audience on this the hottest of investment subjects. You really won't want to miss this!

MALCOLM PALLE - MODERATOR
MiningMaven regulars will know co-founder, Malcolm Palle, as a long time unashamed 'gold bug' and an avid investor in the gold mining and exploration sector. But more recently, as co-founder and now Chairman of blockchain focused venture company Coinsilium Group (NEX:COIN), he is witnessing the unabated rise of cryptocurrencies from close quarters.
"What is happening now in the world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies is really quite extraordinary" Malcolm said "yet many of the investors I talk to either struggle to get their heads around it or don't really appreciate the sheer scale of the blockchain opportunity. When it comes to gold versus cryptocurrencies there's a massive debate going on right now and its drawing in many of the biggest names on both sides of the divide. I am really looking forward to moderating this panel session - dull, I can assure you, it won't be!"
