Event description

Description

We're running a series of 3 study days this May and June. You may think you know these places quite well but we guarantee you'll learn a lot more!

Our third visit is to Crystal Palace which was designed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and relocated from its original home in Hyde Park, to Sydenham Hill in 1854. Lavish gardens were added, with magnificent fountains, statues and trees and full size models of prehistoric animals. In 1936 the Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire. We will explore what is left and how it is managed today

The day will start with a classroom based introduction to Crystal Palace and its history and planting at the IHR from 10.30-1.00. Coffee/tea and light refreshments are available in the IHR Common Room but only after 10.30. The small coffee stall in South Block of Senate House [at the opposite end of the entrance hall to the IHR] is open earlier and you're welcome to bring a drink into the class with you.

After lunch [not provided, so bring a picnic or get something en route] we will travel from Russell Square to Crystal Palace station (thameslink/southern) and then take a 5 mins walk to Crystal Palace Museum which is housed in the only surviving building constructed by the Crystal Palace Company around 1880. The museum will be opened especially for the group and there will be a tour by the curator. There will also be a guided tour of the park and its gardens aled by Chris Sumner which will go ahead whatever the weather - so come prepared! The cost includes the museum and tour of the gardens but please note that transport costs are not included.

As usual the group will be small [max size 16] with a lively illustrated lecture, opportunities for discussion and further personal reading & research suggestions if you wish.

We often have a waiting list for places on our courses so if you book a place, but are unable to use it for any reason, then either find a friend who'd like to come [and tell us!] or email us and we will try and resell it if we can. In that's possible then we will be happy to refund your payment less Eventbrite's fees, otherwise we regret we cannot offer a refund. In the unlikely event of a cancellation of a lecture for any reason we will endeavour to arrange a replacement session as soon as possible.
