About this event

Welcome to the Crystal Palace Subway - September Open Weekend!

Come and join us to explore the beautifully restored Subway. The Subway was opened in 1865 to give train passengers more direct (and less hilly!) access to the famous Crystal Palace.

Visits will be self-guided, with staff and volunteers available to share nuggets of the Subway's remarkable history; from its original use as an entry point to the Crystal Palace for railway passengers, to an air raid shelter, to illegal raves! Last year saw the completion of Phase 1 of the major restoration project to the historic Grade II* listed Crystal Palace Subway. A new roof over the East Courtyard and extensive repairs to the walls, floor, steps and entrances can be explored.

For September we are delighted to open up to visitors across the weekend and welcome Southwark and District Model Railway Club, who will be bringing their large model of Crystal Palace High Level Station.

About Southwark and District Model Railway Club:

We are a small club based in Southwark, South East London catering for railway modellers in Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. We have built a number of layouts over the years including several which are available for exhibitions, these include a large model of local prototype Crystal Palace High Level Station which closed in 1954.

Entry is free and this is a self-led visit. Entry is via a pre-booked timeslot every 15 minutes but places must be booked in advance. Last admission is 2:30pm.

There is also another open day this weekend, on Saturday 13 September: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1559009512419?aff=oddtdtcreator

Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

Accessibility:

Please note there is no step-free access to the Subway. Access is via two flights of stairs with a handrail. The subway has uneven flooring and light changes from bright to dim in various points.
