-----------------------------------------------------------

In a small country on the other side of the world, a rapidly deteriorating situation is unfolding where civil war is brewing. With diplomacy failing, UK nationals trapped, and the humanitarian situation worsening, could you hold the key to a peaceful and successful resolution?

Civil Service START is delighted to invite you to take part in the award-winning Ministry of Defence Crisis Management event, run by acclaimed MoD Outreach Programme Director Andy Gillman MBE.

Highly praised by Sir Jeremy Heywood and Permanent Secretaries across Whitehall, as well as academic awarding bodies and Ofsted, the cross-government event is a unique opportunity for you to develop your team-working and public speaking, and learn more about cross-government working in crisis situations.

How does the event work?

Participants are placed into small teams of 5 or 6 individuals. After receiving a briefing on the current situation coupled with news footage from the region, each team self-appoints the cabinet positions for the duration of the crisis (including Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary). Teams then have to rapidly work together to develop an action plan for managing the crisis, which they then deliver at a press conference where fellow participants role-play as journalists scrutinising proposals.

Each team is judged on their performance both in the planning phases and press conferences, with the winning team receiving signed MoD crested certificates for their efforts, presented by Andy.

We'll then be heading to the Loose Box where you can continue networking with fellow participants.

Tickets are absolutely free! We only ask that you ensure you’re able to attend, and secure your line manager’s approval (the workshop can usually be taken as half of a learning and development day). The success of the event relies on the right number of people taking part, so please only sign up if you’re certain you can make it. We recommend you bring your work pass to avoid delay in accessing the building.

If you’ve purchased a ticket but later find you’re unable to attend, please inform us ASAP so your team isn’t left short.

The workshop is a chance for civil servants in the first few years of their careers to come along and meet colleagues from different departments. Anyone who has joined the civil service in the last 5 years or so is welcome to attend - drop us an email at civilservicestart@gmail.com if you have any questions about the event or about Civil Service START in general.
