Fr. Allan MacDonald Heritage Trail: Guided Walk

Discover the story of Fr. Allan MacDonald – poet, priest, and passionate advocate for Gaelic culture – on a guided walking trail around the island of Eriskay. This walk, created by Comann Eachdraidh Eirisgeidh (Eriskay Historical Society), offers a unique opportunity to explore Fr. Allan’s deep connection to the island and its people.

Appointed Parish Priest of Eriskay in 1893, Fr. Allan quickly became a central figure in the community. He led the effort to build a new church, replacing an inadequate structure with what is now St. Michael’s Church – dedicated on 7th May 1903. Donations came from far and wide, including a full night's catch from local fishermen. The church stands today as a testament to faith and community spirit.

Fr. Allan also introduced the Fisherman’s Mass, a tradition still held every summer thanks to a special dispensation from Pope Leo XIII in 1903. He worked tirelessly for the islanders during times of poverty and overcrowding, championing education, better livelihoods, and the Gaelic language.

Sadly, Fr. Allan passed away from influenza on 8th October 1905. His death was deeply felt on the island, but his legacy lives on.

About the Trail:

The Fr. Allan MacDonald Heritage Trail is marked by eleven stone cairns placed around the island, each with bilingual plaques (Gaelic and English) sharing insights into his life, faith, and writing. Passages from his diaries and local sayings bring the story to life and invite visitors to engage with the island’s cultural heritage.
