This free training has been fully funded by West Sussex County Council and is only available to those working for a West Sussex school (this includes free schools, academies and faith schools). You must register with an email address from a school based in West Sussex to secure your place on this course. Please do not use your personal email address.

This online training session is aimed at any member of school staff who wants to increase their understanding of how issues of masculinity, misogyny, gender-based abuse, and social media influencers are affecting young people; and who wants to gain confidence and skills in engaging young people in reflective conversations. This course also teaches practical skills that can be taught and applied to young people to help them take ownership and promote positive change.

Who is the session for?

Anyone working in schools may overhear or witness misogyny, sexual violence or extreme opinions. Are your staff confident in identifying and addressing it when it happens? This training is relevant to all those working in schools from senior leaders and pastoral teams; to class-based staff; premises and office based staff.

What does the course cover?

This course consists of two halves. Session 1 will be delivered Wednesday, 13th November 09:30-11:30. Session 2 will be delivered Wednesday, 20th November 09:30-11:30.

Session 1 learning objectives:

Recognise how gender stereotypes and gender norms play a role in attitudes, aspirations and lived experiences
Identify traits of ‘toxic masculinity’ and misogynistic behaviours and understand the negative impact these have on both men and women
Examine the relationship between these harmful forms of masculinity and misogyny, gender-based abuse, harassment and violence
Feel confident engaging young people in conversations around misogynistic language or behaviour

Session 2 learning objectives:

Understand how social media content can reinforce gender norms and hateful ideas
Recognise common manipulation tactics used in ‘fake news’ on social media and feel confident discussing these with young people
Recognise the ways social media influencers appeal to young people and explore how to disrupt these
Identify ways we can empower and support young people to create a more inclusive environment
Feel confident to teach and safely apply active bystander intervention skills to intervene in situations in which a person may be at risk of being harmed.

How is the session delivered?

This online session is delivered by two of our dedicated and experienced trainers. Full joining instructions are provided prior to the course starting, using the email provided with the Eventbrite sign-up.

The session involves group activities and discussions. As such, we kindly request that you join with a device that has both a camera and a microphone so that you can fully take part.

Session 2 will take place on Wednesday, 20th November 09:30-11:30. The link will be the same as session 1 but will be re-sent prior to session 2.

Participants will receive a handout and a certificate of attendance emailed to them following the completion of the course.
