Cultural Competence Training (Session One)
Event Information
About this Event
SELF-AWARENESS: UNCONSCIOUS BIAS, STEREOTYPES AND GENERALISATIONS
Facilitators – Julian Harrison and Natalie Darko
THE PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING
To increase self-awareness which it comes to culture and to examine what is meant by unconscious bias and the use of stereotypes and generalisations.
WHAT THE TRAINING INVOLVES
There are three sessions:
The first session begins by looking at what we mean by ‘cultural competence’. It then looks at the issue of self-awareness in this context through a number of challenging activities.
Session Two introduces the concept of Unconscious Bias, examining what we mean by it through the way of examples and activities.
The final session, before lunch, focuses on Stereotypes and Generalisations and the essential distinction between the two. It then looks at the implications of Unconscious Bias and what we need to do about it, before offering some important concluding thoughts.
NOTE: In this training we will be focusing on challenging themes, hurtful stereotypes and uncomfortable personal truths. It is likely that delegates will be moving outside their normal ‘comfort zones’! This is necessary so that we can all become more culturally competent and genuinely advance equality beyond the ‘superficial’.
