KNOWING CULTURE: CULTURAL COMPETENCE ACROSS HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH

About this Event

KNOWING CULTURE: CULTURAL COMPETENCE ACROSS HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH

Facilitator – Julian Harrison

THE PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING

To ensure you have the knowledge, skills and confidence to become more culturally competent in healthcare and research

WHAT THE TRAINING INVOLVES

There are four sessions:

The first session begins by looking at what we mean by ‘culture’ and ‘cultural competence’ and assesses why the latter is important. It then introduces the four components that comprise becoming more culturally competent, with a brief review of the first (Self-Awareness), the focus of a separate, preliminary training session.

The session immediately after lunch examines the second component (Cultural Knowledge) focusing on what we need to know about culture itself and also issues such as Intersectionality and Demographic Change.

The third session looks initially at Cross-Cultural Skills (the third component), addressing the question ‘What do we need to be?’ to be effective in cultural competence. It then looks at cultural competence in Practice (the fourth and last component).

The final session gives us a chance to assess what needs to happen if we feel we don’t know enough about cultural norms and traditions and offers some useful top tips.
