Event description

Description

What does poetry offer culturally diverse audiences? How do poets articulate the experience of cultural crossing which dominates our world today? The popular King’s College London reading series, POETRY AND – chaired by Professor of Poetry Ruth Padel, presents a unique event in which culturally diverse poets explore the way poetry enriches audiences across the globe.

In the early 1980s, BBC World Service commissioned Jack Mapanje to judge a poetry competition for the entire African continent and advise listeners on how to enter. The popular anthology he edited from that competition, Summer Fires - New Poetry of Africa, was published by Heinemann in 1983. Today he joins three other poets to read poems on crossing cultures and to reflect on how poetry can reach across the world.
