Event description

Description

The WGSN trend-forecasting guide for A/W 19/20 mentions "Collaborations between fashion and craft will foster storytelling and authenticity. Respectful, ethical partnerships that support communities and conscious, handcrafted fashion are set to become a new form of luxury".

Fashion exceeds function and artistic expression. It becomes a form of education and a medium to create social impact.

Luxury is redefined.

Today's challenge is to create products that respond to a meta-trend: sustainability in all its forms. Cultural sustainability is one of them.

In this workshop we will talk about culturally sustainable products and projects in the fashion industry and try to answer these questions and more:

Why is cultural appropriation such a hot topic and when does inspiration become appropriation?

Can a fashion business foster cultural sustainability?

Can we include artisans in contemporary fashion supply chains and what are the risks and challenges?

What is the next step for ethical fashion?

Monica Boța-Moisin is a cultural intellectual property and fashion lawyer.

She founded the Cultural Intellectual Property Rights Initiative and together with her team tries to build bridges between the fashion industry and artisans in promoting luxury craftsmanship as part of the contemporary fashion supply chain. www.culturalintellectualproperty.com
