Culture and Sustainability
Event Information
Description
Julie's Bicycle and The Tetley invite you to join us for this one day event sparking a conversation on environmental sustainability in the arts.
Ahead of the UN climate talks in Paris this December, this event brings together cultural leaders, arts organisations and practitioners to share knowledge and experience, and discuss our collective response to action planning and leading as a sector moving forward.
The main event programme will be followed by a free focused surgery session with the Julie’s Bicycle team for Arts Council England NPO and MPM organisations to interrogate environmental action planning and reporting further. (Surgery session from 15.30 - 17.00)
Alison Tickell (Julie's Bicycle) and Jane Tarr (Arts Council England) will share insights from the latest research on how arts and cultural organisations are addressing environmental sustainability, and a panel of cultural leaders will share their various approaches, including case studies from:
Nicola Walker | Head of Collections Care and Access
Leadership in Sustainability
Rick Faulkner | Director, Chrysalis Arts
Creator of the Public Art Sustainability Assessment
Ellie Harrison | Artist
Ellie's 'Early Warning Signs' are currently on display at The Tetley as part of ArtCOP21
Alan Lane | Director, Slung Low and The Hub
Working to 'green' their building and engage the local community
The panel and Q&A will be followed by lunch and themed afternoon breakout sessions. The afternoon session will also introduce you to leaders of two key campaigns currently inviting contributions from cultural leaders.
Alan Dix | Director, 509 Arts
Instigator of the climate campaign, Coming of Age: 21 Reasons to Change the World
Laura McFarlane-Shopes | Coordinator, Leeds Tidal
Leading on a county-wide programme of climate-related activities and events for Nov-Dec
The day will include ample time for networking and discussion, so we can all come away with a sense of purpose and practical actions. Performance poet Michelle Scally Clarke will aid in summarising our reflections of the day.
What does a sustainable future look like for the arts and culture? What kind of leadership do we need to galvanise change? How can we work together to create a strong and resilient sector?
Join us to explore these questions and more!
