Kings and Parliaments – the struggle for political power

Over 700 years ago the king found it useful to meet with a group of his subjects (barons, bishops, wealthy landowners – together known as ‘parliament’) to agree about new laws and taxes. This helped the king to rule – but if king and parliament disagreed which one would have the last word? In 17th century they fought a war to determine which was the more important: the king lost and was executed! Gradually kings and parliaments learned to work together for the country’s good – until eventually the Crown became the non-political Head of State and Parliament elected by the people became the true source of government. Quite a dramatic story!

Please Note: Please only book a place if you intend to come. For some of our recent events, people have booked places, and then have not attended. This has been disappointing for events where our hosts have prepared food for us in advance, and were expecting all those who had booked to attend; and it has also been disappointing for our events which have been fully booked, and where we have had other students on the waiting list for tickets who would have liked to have come.

How to Cancel an Order on Eventbrite: If you book a ticket and then find you are unable to attend, please cancel your tickets in good time (at least a day in advance). If you don't already have an eventrbite account, then you will need to create one by using the link near the bottom of your booking email under "Your Account" and click log in to set up your own password and create an account. When you have logged in to Eventbrite, go to the "Tickets" page, and find your order. Click your order to view order details, and then select “Cancel Order” to cancel your registration.
