Description

ART SAMPLING WORKSHOP

Culture Move (Sampled History) is an exhibition spanning art, music and performance, tracing the diverse cultural heritage of Brent. The show explores the history of sampled music in the borough since the advent of Hip-Hop in the 1980s – celebrating a cultural movement initiated and led by young people as a positive creative outlet that continues to resonate across the generations. The project is curated by Jaykoe and marks Brent 2020 as part of the London Borough of Culture initiative.

PURPOSE:
The project aims to recognise the distinct cultural output of Brent, connecting with the shared creativity of multiple generations within the artistic space of the museum. Collaboration is key to the project - to engage with the local community, participants are invited to bring personal objects and images, particularly those relevant to their culture and life in Brent, to be ‘sampled’ in artwork for the exhibition. The sampling methods are non-destructive to the originals and are based on scanning, photography, copying and transferring, silkscreen printing, cyanotype printing etc. to create new visually rhythmic compositions out of these elements. Any high resolution images captured can be sent on via wetransfer.com and the works on paper that are made during the workshop can be taken away or entered for consideration in the exhibition at Brent Museum.

STEPS:
This workshop is based on the cultural phenomenon of music sampling, which essentially involves ‘selecting’ certain ‘materials’ from an ‘archive’ for creative reinterpretation in a contemporary context, forming a new ‘composition’.

1. Research and query the history of diversity and sampled music in Brent: search the Brent Archives, library books, articles, audio recordings and videos, websites etc.

2. Select materials to use: images, audio, text, artefacts, personal objects etc.

3. ‘Sample’ the objects (scan / photograph / transfer / silkscreen print / cyanotype etc) and create new visually rhythmic compositions out of these elements.

BRING:
Participants are invited to bring personal objects and images, particularly those relevant to their culture or their life in Brent, to be ‘sampled’ (scanned / copied / photographed / exposed) Other materials will be provided.
