Event Details

Description: The day will combine theory and practical analysis, providing an understanding of factors affecting comfort and health in homes. There will be a site visit to a home, to analyse factors within a home that has damp and ventilation issues.

Aims: To provide participants with an understanding of the relationships between the key environmental factors at play within dwellings. The analysis of a dwelling, through data-logged information and a site visit, will allow theory to be applied practically.

Topics: In brief, the topics covered during this day include: Thermal comfort; Moisture within dwellings; Ventilation; Site visit and analysis

Presenter Biography: Your presenter for the day is Diane Hubbard BSc(Hons), MSc.

Diane Hubbard is mechanical engineer whose recent work has focused on the issues of improving the energy efficiency of traditional homes.

Her work in relation to air flows, air quality,  airtightness and thermal imaging is practically applied through her consultancy Green Footsteps, working for individual clients and on larger projects, which include work for Historic Scotland and the Society for the Protection on Ancient Buildings (SPAB). She is also a certified Passivhaus Consultant, applying Passivhaus principles to the refurbishment of existing buildings.

Diane initiated the development of a pilot qualification for the refurbishment of traditional buildings for Cumbria Action for Sustainability / the University of Cumbria and has been involved nationally with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in a formal qualification on the same subject.

Diane has an MSc in Architecture (Centre for Alternative Technology) and continues her building physics research – investigating the relationship between air flows in existing buildings, energy loss, building fabric and occupant health.
