Event Details

This full-day course is for professionals and well-informed homeowners who are retrofitting properties for flood resilience and energy efficiency, or for representatives from community groups supporting those who’ve been affected by flooding.

This Level 4, CPD-certified course will help you determine the best approach for retrofitting any given building, taking into account the nature of its construction and an understanding of how water from flooding and extreme rainfall affects buildings.

The course will explore:

  • the options available for flood and extreme weather resilience and energy efficiency retrofitting
  • the suitability of options for different types of buildings
  • how the options fit with current building regulations
  • meeting the requirements of insurers

The day may include a site visit to a property in Kendal that has previously been flooded.

This is one in a series of courses on Retrofitting Buildings for Energy Efficiency, but it is a standalone course and you don’t have to have attended any of the others to benefit from this one.

Cumbria Action for Sustainability provide this course in response to requests for guidance from householders and contractors about flood resilience and energy efficiency. There is often conflicting advice, particularly where traditional buildings are concerned. To address this and to support community rebuilding, we’re working in partnership with Cumbria CVS on a project called Rebuilding Together, funded by Cumbria Community Foundation.

Is this course for me?

The course is best suited to property/asset managers and building professionals such as contractors and architects. You may also benefit from this course if you are a householder with enhanced knowledge about construction methods, or if you are from a community group advising householders affected by flooding.

The course is at a Level 4, meaning that the content is similar in level to a module of a university bachelor’s degree.

Cost

Thanks to funding from The Big Lottery, we are able to offer this Level 4 CPD-certified course at subsidised cost of £35 to:

  • anyone living in Cumbria
  • building professionals whose work is in Cumbria

If you don’t attend or cancel within 2 working days of the course, you will be liable to pay the £35 course fee. By booking a place on this course, you are agreeing to this condition of booking.

Presenter

Your course presenter is James Innerdale.

James is an architect at Crosby Granger Architects, specialising in the repair, conservation and adaptation of historic buildings. He believes in the inherent importance of the history, fabric and craftsmanship of old buildings, as well as the need to understand the traditional methods used in their construction.

He has experience of all aspects of building project management and administration. His clients include domestic home owners as well as the National Trust and places of worship.

James has also been engaged to provide heritage skills training for the North of England Civic Trust, the Heritage Trust for the North West, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the IHBC. He provides training for homeowners, professionals and contractors.

James was awarded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Scholarship in 1996 and has subsequently worked for the SPAB as its northern officer and is a member of the technical panel and technical officer for the SPAB Maintenance Co-operatives Project.
