Event description
Filipino Migrants' Stories of Struggle, Survival and Success

About this Event

Curating the Mind: Final Exhibition tells the story of migrants' struggle, survival and success. It is the story of how they embrace their daily struggles in a foreign land away from their homes and families. It is the story of how they survive the challenges, loneliness, isolation, discrimination and exploitation. It is the story of how they thrive and succeed in their quest for connection, recognition and integration.

The exhibit will showcase selected artworks of Filipino migrants who participated in the two-year art workshop “Curating the Mind”, a wellness programme funded by the People’s Health Trust and facilitated by Kanlungan Filipino Consortium.

As a community-based art workshop, ‘Curating the Mind’ is primarily aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of Filipino migrants and other Black, minority, ethnic groups residing in Waltham Forest and Newham boroughs. It aims to foster participants’ community bond, build their self-esteem, strengthen their resilience, and bolster their mental health.

Using theme-based approach, a series of art workshops from paintings, drawings, sculpture-making, embroidery, pottery, body tattooing, weaving, photography, performance art, dancing, music and body movements became a medium for migrants’ self-expression of their identity and sense of community. It provided supported approach in tackling issues related to their home and family life, social relationships, community bond, conflicts and struggles, coping and resilience, sense of wellbeing, and other life challenges.
