This panel discussion looks at the role of the curator, an essential but sometimes overlooked role within the visual arts. The expert speakers examine how curators can develop their careers, as well as looking at the role of a curator in working alongside artists and galleries to devise a show.
Featuring Matthew Pendergast, curator at Castlefield Gallery and Thomas Dukes, curator at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool.

About the speakers
Matthew Pendergast is curator at Castlefield Gallery, one of Northern England’s most active and successful organisations/agencies for developing emerging contemporary artists and practice. Its ambitious curated exhibitions programme responds to national and international trends, promoting artists at key stages of their careers, including subsequent Turner Prize nominees/winners and exhibitors at international festivals.
Thomas Dukes has compled a Masters in Arts, Aesthetics and Cultural Institutions at Liverpool University. Having completed a work placement with Open Eye Gallery at Wood Street, Thomas continued to assist curator Karen Newman in the inaugural Mann Island exhibitions of Mitch Epstein and Richard Mosse until joining the gallery as Exhibitions Coordinator for the Mishka Henner show, Precious Commodities.
Having taken three years away from Open Eye working in venue and Arts Collective Management Thomas has returned to look after artist liaison, exhibition logistics and programming public events.
