Event description

Description

The fifth of our professional development events for artists and curators will take place on Thursday 27th September at Cafe Ollo, The Media Centre, Huddersfield. These events give you the chance to hear from creative professionals about the work they do and how they can help you to develop your own practice. You’ll also have the chance to have a drink and meet other people working in the creative industries.

This event focuses on how creatives can come together to develop their own opportunities to make and show art, and to tell the story of the area where they live and work. Speakers include members of the artist and maker collective The Making Space in conversation, and a Q&A with director / oral historian, Mandeep Samra and film maker, Zoe East. There will also be a short film screening of Mandeep and Zoe's Heritage Lottery funded work 'A New Life in Huddersfield - Memories of Partition and Migration'.

The Venue

The Media Centre is a non-profit organisation that aims to be a platform for enterprise innovation, creative expression, learning and civic discourse. Opened in 1995 the centre occupies three buildings in Huddersfield’s town centre and is now home to nearly 200 small businesses and social enterprises. As well as supporting our resident members, The Media Centre hosts regular exhibitions, conferences, performances, weekly meetups and also organises PechaKucha Nights and Huddersfield SOUP.

The Making Space

The Making Space is a cooperatively-run shared workspace in Huddersfield where craft makers, technologists, artists, engineers, musicians, and anyone interested in learning, can share their skills, and by sharing begin to collaborate on new ideas, projects and products. The most important skill is being interested in learning, and we welcome anyone who wants to get involved. We also use two empty shops in the town centre as events spaces for exhibitions, concerts, meetings, workshops and artist residencies.

A New Life in Huddersfield

The film 'A New Life in Huddersfield - Memories of Partition and Migration' documents Huddersfield’s survivors and their families stories of the 1947 Partition of India and the subsequent migration to the UK in search of a better future. The men and women taking part speak of their first impressions of Huddersfield, finding employment, which for many was in the textile industry, changes in the Indian Sikh and Muslim communities, and race relations. The film includes contemporary footage of Huddersfield, its South Asian community, and commentary on the importance of sharing this history with future generations.

Contributors include Jamil Akhtar, Mansaf Ali, Mohammed Hanif Asad, Hemant Kaur Dutta, Hardev Singh Gakhal, Nasim Hasnie, Muhammad Iqbal, Tarsem Singh Kang, Barry Pavier, Abdul Rashid and Gindi Sarai. The documentary has been developed by Let’s Go Yorkshire as part of The White Line heritage project and has been supported by Heritage Lottery Fund.
