The curious history of High Holborn, from a Tudor bishop's dung heap to a cold war bunker via discarded remnants of Westminster Abbey

About this event

High Holborn, a road with its origins in the Roman period running from the City of London to the edge of the West End, deserves a closer look. Yet all too often, visitors don’t see beyond the office blocks and shops.

Even if they do, tours of the area typically overlook its more obscure treasures and concentrate on the famous Lincoln’s Inn, Gray's Inn and Staple Inn, but in a radical departure from the norm, I completely ignore all three. Instead, I focus on the less well-known buildings, history and public art. Criss-crossing the road itself, we’ll encounter tales of medieval bishops, ladies dancing with the devil (or maybe the Spanish ambassador), radical socialists, diamonds, plaster busts of dubious quality and a1920s cinema with a revolutionary programming policy. We won’t encounter a reclining nude Pocahontas - but that’s all part of the story. And, of course, Charles Dickens makes an appearance - he always does!

Approximate Walking Distance: 1.7 miles / 2.7 km. Average Duration: 1 hour 55 minutes.
