About the Event

Join us for a celebration of the Curiosity in Action programme and the youth work and researcher partnerships that worked together in a long-term partnership to explore how STEM could be used as a tool to support youth work. The celebration will be a chance to:

  • share our learning and free resources from our Curiosity in Action programme
  • connect with other peers, including youth workers, community learning and development practitioners (CLD), researchers, science engagement practitioners, educators and policy-makers passionate about supporting the youth work sector, particularly through using STEM
  • hear from other organisations about inspiring projects happening within the youth work sector
  • take part in some STEM-inspired youth work activities!

The event will be held at Tynecastle Park in collaboration with the Hearts of Midlothian Innovation Centre (see map here ) in the daytime of Monday 15 September.

The event schedule will be added here soon and emailed out to attendees in advance of the event.

Travel Bursaries

We’re especially keen to welcome youth workers and CLD practitioners alongside those interested in science engagement and so we have a limited number of travel bursaries available that can include, but not limited to, transport, accommodation and childcare costs. We will be allocating these on the basis of ensuring a wide range of attendees, as far as possible. Applications from youth workers, CLD practitioners and roles who would not be able to attend the event without bursary support will be prioritised.

You can let us know if you would like to apply for a bursary through this short application form. Bursaries are allocated on a rolling basis, with the team meeting at the end of each month to review applications from that month. The latest we will let people know about bursaries will  be August 25th. We encourage you to apply for the bursary early and give a realistic indication of anticipated costs of attending to allow us to allocate as fairly as possible.

About Curiosity in Action

Curiosity in Action is a two-year programme involving youth workers and researchers across Scotland working together in long-term partnerships to develop and deliver STEM-themed activities with youth groups. The programme focuses on understanding how these activities impact young people's social development, foster their resilience, communication, teamwork, and overall wellbeing. The programme is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in partnership with Youthlink Scotland and a wider steering group.

Questions

See the frequently asked questions sections for more details. If you have any other questions about the event or the bursary and would like to get in touch, please email katie@scienceceilidh.com.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Tynecastle Park?

Tynecastle Park is located close to the West End of Edinburgh with the nearest train station being Haymarket. From Haymarket, it is approximately 10 minutes on the bus (Lothian numbers 1, 2, 3, 21, 25, 33 and First numbers 25, 27, 28 & 427) or a 20-minute walk along Dalry Road and Gorgie Road.

Is there parking available at Tynecastle Park?

There are no special parking arrangements and traffic wardens strictly control street parking in the immediate vicinity of the stadium. There is some on-street parking available north of Murrayfield Stadium and Corstorphine Road, and south of Gorgie Road and in the Shandon area.

Do I need to be a member of Curiosity in Communities to attend?

You don’t need to already be a member of Curiosity in Communities to attend. Both members and people new to the network and project are very welcome to attend and celebrate how STEM can be used as a tool to support youth work.

Can I attend just for part of the day?

We are keen for people to be able to stay for the full day to get the most out of the event. If you are hoping to join but can only join for part of the day, please get in touch to let us know.

Is lunch provided?

Lunch will be provided along with teas and coffees throughout the day. Please let us know of any dietary requirements you have on the registration form.

Will the event be live-streamed or have any hybrid components?

We will not be live-streaming or running the event hybridly to allow for in-person participants to get the most out of the event. We will be recording some of the talks and writing a blog post to share online after the event.

Who can apply for the bursary?

All individuals are eligible, but we're especially keen for youth workers and CLD practitioners to join us. We also recognise there are others working in this area who may not have access to funding to support travel and welcome applications from anyone who would not otherwise be able to attend.

How much is possible to apply for with the bursary?

Whilst there isn’t a specific amount that is a maximum, we have a limited bursary pot overall and so will be doing the best we can to ensure a wide range of people can attend. Please give a realistic indication of anticipated expenses to attend to allow us to allocate as fairly as possible.
