Curiosity not Conclusions: Assisting not Assuming!

Many authors include in titles of their work the words trauma and body, but how do we clinically incorporate this into practice?

With the rapid growth of awareness, knowledge and concern about the far reaching and damaging effects of physical / emotional / psychological trauma, and the fundamental dissonance that this damage can cause to the person, therapists of all modalities are seeking practical and effective ways to develop therapeutic skills, knowledge and understanding to help our clients to repair that which has been ruptured in their earlier lives.

This workshop will use practical and theoretical sessions to extend knowledge and skills in talking therapy into working with the body, so healing the whole person and not just the mind. We will also consider the effects that this work may have on the practitioner and explore ways of developing awareness, resilience and efficacy.

Norma Howes originally trained and worked as a Social Worker, Child Forensic Psychologist and is now a Sensorimotor Psychotherapist. She is currently involved in training agency staff and other therapists on all aspects of childhood trauma, specialising in assessing/treating victims of sexual trauma. She also has a private practice working with adults and children who have experienced significant harm as children and/or as adults. She is especially interested in the impact of trauma/abuse/domestic abuse in childhood has on attachment, the survival strategies needed at the time and how these inform consequent relationships and behaviours.

As a workshop leader, Norma has a particular talent for enabling the practitioner to embed theory into practical application in the consulting room to effect transformational change.
