We'll be joined by Simon Ruding PhD, who will offer an insight into the work of TiPP (Theatre in Prisons and Probation) and the impact of the arts in criminal justice settings. Drawing on examples of practice, the session will provide an explanation of TiPP’s core beliefs/values and explore how those beliefs and values translate into creative arts practice.
Simon Ruding is a respected leader in the field of socially engaged theatre, with over 35 years’ experience developing and delivering arts-based interventions across the criminal justice system. Since 1999, he has been Director of TiPP, where he has pioneered trauma-informed, creative methodologies in prisons, probation services, youth justice, mental health settings, and with people in recovery.
In addition to his practice-based work, Simon has a strong background in research. He holds a PhD in Applied and Social Theatre from the University of Manchester and his thesis explored the intersection of creativity, theatre and restorative justice within criminal justice contexts. His academic work complements his practice, contributing to a growing evidence base for the transformative potential of participatory arts. He frequently collaborates with universities and research institutions and is a sought-after speaker and contributor in both academic and policy settings.
Simon also contributes to the wider cultural and justice sectors through advisory roles, collaborations and board memberships. He is actively involved with UnCurbed Collective, Quilts for Care Leavers and Cultivate EM. He sits on the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance (NCJAA) advisory panel, and contributes to cross-sectoral partnerships focused on inclusion, rehabilitation, and cultural access. He frequently works as a consultant and mentor for other arts and social justice organisations across the UK and internationally.Simon is committed to amplifying lived experience through creative practice and policy influence. His work continues to demonstrate how the arts can challenge inequality, shift narratives, and support lasting personal and social change.
TiPP
TiPP (Theatre in Prisons and Probation), based at the University of Manchester, was founded in 1991, developing participatory theatre and performance projects for criminal justice setting. Over time, TiPP diversified artistically—adding music, film, animation, visual arts, sculpture, and photography—broadening its creative offer.
TiPP delivers bespoke, high‑quality arts programmes across prisons, probation services, youth justice teams, and community settings in the North West and Yorkshire.
The company’s guiding vision is that participatory art can catalyse personal and social transformation for people caught up in the justice system. TiPP’s work aims to improve self‑efficacy, wellbeing, literacy, oracy, employment prospects, and family and social relationships, while also being fun and playful.
