Curse of the Green Fairy: Lecture on Absinthe & Impressionism by Jad Adams
Tue 10 January 2017, 18:30 – 21:30 GMT
The Last Tuesday Society invites Jad Adams, authour of Hideous Absinthe: A History of the Devil in a Bottle, to talk on the subject of Absinthe & Impressionism – followed by an optional absinthe tasting with Jade Liqueurs fine absinthes for those brave at heart.
Mysteriously sophisticated, darkly alluring, almost Satanic: absinthe was the drink of choice for Baudelaire, Verlaine and Wilde. It inspired paintings by Degas and Manet, van Gogh and Picasso. It was blamed for conditions ranging from sterility to madness, to French defeats in World War I. The campaign against "the devil in a bottle" resulted in its ban throughout most of Europe. Its reputation for toxicity eventually extinguished the fin-de-siecle's infatuation with absinthe, but not before it had influenced generations of artists on both sides of the channel. This book is a biography of "the green fairy": from its place in the lives of writers and artists who were inspired--and ruined--by it, to its more recent rediscovery by Ernest Hemingway and today's would-be sophisticates.
After the lecture, guests will be invited to sample the green spirit for themselves with an expert from Jade Liqueurs Fine Absinthes talking the group through the traditional Belle Epoque style of drinking Absinthe.
Jade's 7 different absinthes range between 65-72%.
Our absinthe menu ranges from a modest 55% abv to the UK's strongest absinthe available on the market at 85% abv.
Absinthe tasting will incur addition cost based on the spirit selected. All guests are invited to stay and watch the process & effects as they unfold.
