Who can take part?

We are asking people to take part in the project who have lived experience of regeneration in Custom House or who are participating in community-led regeneration in the area.

Is there an age limit?

We especially welcome interest from young people (aged 16-30) and elders (aged 50+), people who identify as working class and Black and Global Majority individuals living, working or studying in Custom House. We aim for this breadth of voices to be reflective of Newham’s diversity.

Question 3

What is the project?

The project will involve training up to 12 people in oral history techniques to record an interview from a Custom House community member. So 12 people will have their oral history interview audio recorded by the trained volunteer interviewers and also have their photographic portrait taken.

Question 4

Will the oral history interviews and photographic portraits be shared publicly?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the oral history interviews and photographic portraits will be displayed in public exhibitions and printed/digital publications in summer 2025. There will be a public programme of events to celebrate the people who have contributed to the project and raise awareness about Custom House heritage.

What is the purpose of the project?

To create an archive of oral history interviews and photographic portraits with people who have lived experience of regeneration in Custom House or are participating in community-led regeneration in the area, to inspire citizens and future generations interested in community-led regeneration.
