About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

Cuttlefish casting is an ancient technique of casting metal using found cuttle bones that get washed up on the beach. Two bones are rubbed together to form a flush flat surface between which you can press objects and scratch designs. Creating a pour hole, you can then melt and pour molten metal into the mould, creating beautiful cast designs that retain some of the texture of the cuttle. In this course, you will use pewter to create unique castings which can be turned into jewellery or creative objects.

Most materials are provided, including cuttle bones and pewter. You can purchase silver if required at 65p per gram; the amount you will need depends on what you want to make. Feel free to bring jewellery-sized objects to cast, some items will also be supplied.

For safety purposes, please wear a long-sleeved top and no open shoes when pouring the molten metal.

About the courses at Phoenix Art Space

Phoenix Art Space's courses provide a mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing, and aspiring artists and art lovers. They are suitable for anyone (including beginners unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to sign up in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.

All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.

We accept payments online by credit or debit card and PayPal. Offline payment options are only available when booking a ticket in person at the Phoenix Art Space front desk during gallery opening hours.

We regret we are unable to provide car or bicycle parking facilities (except for students with disabilities).

If you have any additional needs please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate them. We have disabled access on the ground floor where the courses are held, including a ramp and toilet facilities. Please email chloe@phoenixbrighton.org for information.

Booking Terms and Conditions:

Refunds require 2 weeks notice prior to the start of the course and will involve the deduction of our costs such as transaction fees or bank charges. If less than less than 2 weeks notice is given prior to the course start date we regret that refunds or transfers to other courses are NOT possible.

Courses are aimed at over 18s.

If a course is cancelled we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible by sending participants an email. It is rare for us to cancel courses but it occasionally happens due to events beyond our control, in that case we refund the payment in full.

Please ensure you check your email before a class starts as we or the tutor may be in touch with instructions/advice.
