CWGC VJ Day 80 Commemoration
Event Overview
Join us in the historic setting of Stirling Castle’s Chapel Royal for a special public event commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) — a pivotal moment in global history marking the end of the Second World War.
Hosted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, in partnership with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Museum, Historic Environment Scotland and CofFEPOW, this event reflects on the human cost of the war in the Far East and honours those who served, suffered, and sacrificed.
The afternoon will feature a powerful and thought-provoking series of short presentations from military historians, heritage professionals, and family representatives. Together, we’ll explore the experiences of Scottish soldiers and civilians during the Far East conflict and the ongoing efforts to preserve their memory.
What to Expect
Engaging 10–15 minute talks from a range of expert speakers
- Opportunity to learn about CWGC’s international mission, ongoing research, and inclusive commemoration efforts.
- Freedom to come and go throughout the session — attend the entire event or drop in for selected presentations.
- Printed programmes and seating provided on-site.
Why Attend?
This event offers a unique chance to reflect on a chapter of WWII history that is often underrepresented in public commemoration. Whether you have a personal connection to the Far East campaign, an interest in military or social history, or a desire to better understand the legacy of conflict and remembrance in a global context — you will find this event both moving and meaningful!
Held in the beautiful and historic Chapel Royal, the setting is itself a space of solemnity and heritage — making it an ideal place to come together in remembrance, learning, and respect.
