About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is looking for volunteers to support our horticulture teams with the maintenance of CWGC formal planted borders – such as weeding, at Harrogate (Stonefall Cemetery) on the 9th of September 2025.

The activities on the day will include supporting our team to prepare a plot for a RAF Ceremony. This will include dead heading, mulching roses, border work, and cutting out tree circles.

With over 1000 was graves, Stonefall is one of the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission sites in the North of England. Nearly all of the casualties are Second World War aircrew who lie far from home.

The day will take place between 10:00am - 3pm, with an optional tour of the site in the afternoon where our guide will share tales of courage and resilience telling the stories of casualties from East Africa, Fiji, the Caribbean, Canada, Australia and New Zealand who are buried at Stonefall.

Parking and toilet facilities are available on site, and no experience is necessary. All relevant training will be delivered on the day. Please bring lunch, we will provide tea, coffee and plenty of sweet treats!

If you are interested in gardening, or military history - this is a fantastic oppertunity to get involved. We look forward to welcoming you to Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery!

Across Britain there are war graves and memorials at over 12,000 locations. From towering and dramatic memorials which bear the names of tens of thousands of missing personnel, to small and intimate local churchyards where perhaps only one service person is commemorated, there is so much to discover.
